Reading Deborah

Hi Everyone. My today was full of unexpected events - like an unexpected trip I suddenly had to take this morning ... then unexpectedly taking a wrong turn while en route... and unexpectedly finding myself lost! Isn't life like that sometimes? Thankfully I found my way home in time for class at the university, but not in time to post the next reading before now.

The next lady we are reading about is Deborah and it won't take you long. You can find her in Judges chapters 4 and 5 which are linked here.

    I did it. I forgot all about Jael! Was Deborah the one who called her most blessed of tent-dwelling women? I got lost during it and couldn't really tell if it was Deborah or the angel of the Lord which spoke in 5:23.

    I also read Deborah, and in concordance with the first "anonymous" post, I too would love to hear your thoughts on Jael as well.

    I must say that with all of the various names of both people and places, it made for some irregularity in reading concentration, however, that makes me even more anxious to hear everyone's connotations.

    Wow! Now those are the kind of passages that I usually get lost in...those with so many names of people, places, towns, etc. I also get lost on "songs". Thank God we have Rachel and each other to further explain this. Rachel, can you help explain the other hundreds of passages that are confusing too. HAHA LOL.

    Tina - the way I read it, an angel is talking in 5:23 but it appears to be Deborah talking in 5:24 where Jael is referenced as a blessed woman.

    Wow..Rachel, I hope you touch on that...how is someone who kills another (even a "bad" person) considered blessed?

    Even though I had read this story before it still came as a shock when Jael killed Sisera.
    Really looking forward to your wise insights into this story from God's word. I too can't wait to get online each day and read the passage or the thoughts on it.

    I read it -- got a little lost in the song, too. I mostly stumbled trying to figure out how the events in Chapter 4 lined up with the song in Chapter 5.

    I totally agree with "Sweetpea" regarding the numerous names of people and towns creating confusion when trying to decipher pronunciations, relationships and locations. It makes it more difficult to concentrate on the actual message itself.

    Also, although I understand Jael's reasoning for her actions, I think she could have accomplished her goal in a less "gruesome" manner! Seems that she would have had to have had a "hardened heart" to execute Sisera's demise in such a fashion. I should think that a severe blow on the head with a blunt object would have done the job satisfactorily! Leads me to wonder if bloodshed was considered more
    "heroic" or "significant" in biblical days, perhaps in conjunction with the sacrificial lamb and the blood of protection during Passover. Hmmm.....something to think about!

    I am really looking forward to Rachel's opening discussion and thoughts on the subject.

    I read it and I must admit I was getting lost with all the names and places with all the pronuciations. It makes it harder for me to concentrate. Sounds like I'm not the only one, thank goodness! Looking foward to your insight!

    I read it. I found it to be a bit confusing with the names and places. I had to re-read it in another bible translation. At first I thought it was just me, being new to the whole bible study thing. Then after reading some of the posts, I felt a little better. I can't wait to read Rachel's insight. (New York)

    I finally did it and find the fact that a woman was "in charge" somewhat disconcerting given the male dominance of that point in history. Was it usual for women like Jael to invite a man into a tent and then murder him? And in such a gruesome manner!
    God bless you for making us read passages that we probably wouldn't otherwise know about -- takes me back to scripture lessons in school in the 50s!
