Mystery Fruit

Came off the soccer field this morning.  Made a weekly menu. Shopped.  Now cooking three meals at once.

Completed in the pot: Black Bean Soup
Up on deck: 20 Clove Garlic Chicken in the crock pot
Last in today's line up: Chicken Broccoli Cheese Casserole

While at the grocery store I bought a bag of mystery fruit for $1.00. I couldn't resist at that price!  I recognized the star fruit in there. I like those and they're usually $3 each.  I'll probably make some sparkling jello for the kids and put the star fruit in with some grapes.

I figured out what the other odd looking piece was: a cactus pear. Any idea what to do with that?? I have two of  them and I'm clueless so I haven't sliced it open yet.

I just sliced into what I thought was an orange, but it's a blood orange. They're in season right now. I think I'm going to put them on our salad when I serve the garlicky chicken. But if you've got other ideas, I'm all ears.

My friend LeAnn Rice is cooking up some lemon chicken on her blog. And my friend Ann Kroeker is hosting her Food on Friday's with lots of interesting links. What's cookin at your place?

  1. Never had a cactus pear, wouldn't even know what it looks like but you're brave for trying it!

  2. I wish our store would offer mystery fruit. Your catch sounds interesting and a bargain. The castus pear can have the ends sliced off, cut down the middle and peel. Put in the blender then strain. Use the juice over a salad, or in lemon aid, or if you are adventurous, simply eat the fruit. It is fun to try new things.

  3. Thanks, Joyful Noise! Might have to try a bit straight and put a bit in some lemonade.

  4. Well, I had the greasiest slice of pizza known to man at a roller skating party for a 10 year old tonight... now that's DINNER!!! :) Enjoy your mystery fruit ~ I am not the adventurous with my food!

  5. Tamara, isn't it terrific fun when you find a great meal in an unexpected place? Unfortunately, it sounds like that roller rink didn't exceed any expectations. At least you can burn off the calories rolling around the rink!

  6. Oh my heavens, I totally love the "mystery fruit" idea. Apparently our grocery stores have no sense of mystery or our shoppers have no sense of adventure or curiosity.

I appreciate your commenters' suggestions! I think your idea of cutting up the orange on a salad is fabulous.

I made a salad that I totally loved (I'll have to put it on Food on Fridays sometime)--the base was fresh baby spinach and one of many toppings was an orange. It was really good. I make variations on it all the time, with that baby spinach base.

Thanks for linking to Food on Fridays!

  7. Your fruit is lovely, but it's the 20 clove garlic chicken that really intrigues me. Bet that will be wonderful. I just made some baked bananas with strawberry sauce and it was yummo. Still to come: sausage with bbq sauce and pineapple bits. It's a good food day :)
