Bread for Life (P31 Giveaway)

What a great week this is shaping up to be already! Sunday was Valentine's - my sweetie brought me chocolate cheesecake. Yesterday I hosted the devotional carnival on love - you can still jump in on that if you'd like - and I enjoyed reading devotions all day long.

And today the celebration continues with P31's Whirlwind Giveaway carnival!

I thought carefully about what to give away today. I decided I wanted to give you something that's been bringing me joy this year so we could share in it together.

First, I'm reading thru the Bible this year in The Message translation (learn more about that decision here). I got it in a daily reading format that only takes about 15 minutes a day. Each day has a section of the Bible, followed by a proverb or a psalm, and the readings end with 2 reflection questions. Oh, and this plan takes one day off each week. I even got the audio version to listen to on my treadmill.

If you win, I'll send you a copy of the Daily Message Bible and you can jump in reading on whichever day you receive it. Really, what better gift to receive than the Bread of Life?

Second, I've been learning to love cooking. Really getting into it like never before. Most every afternoon I start eagerly looking forward to getting in the kitchen, putting my iPod on, and creating something aromatic and tasty. (My hometown girlfriend Katie probably just fainted reading that.) So I'm trying out new recipes, and I got you a copy of a Williams & Sonoma cookbook I have on Muffins.

It has recipes for fruit muffins, veggie muffins, savory muffins, coffee cakes and quick breads. Want examples? Vanilla Pear Muffins, Lemon Poppy Seed, Onion and Shallot Muffins, Cinnamon Sweet Potato Muffins, Bacon and Gruyere Muffins, Spiced Apple Coffee Cake, Pumpkin Bread with Dates, and more! And did I mention, it's received twenty-five 5-star reviews on Amazon?

And so there you have it - Bread for Life. To win, leave a comment including your email telling me: What usually gets you back on track when you're feeling off or "dry" spiritually? And if you don't know the answer to that - fair enough, just tell me that. I seek honest answers.

Do you follow me on Twitter, subscribe to this blog, or hang with me on Facebook? If not and you choose to do one of those today, let me know in your comment and it will double your chances at winning!

Be sure to check out the rest of the giveaways my P31 sisters are offering. Here's what you could win:

  1. When I'm in a spiritual dry spell, I think about all I have to be thankful for & reflect on the many ways the Lord has blessed me in my life. Then, I get out my Bible & read...after that, I'm good to go once again!

    Great giveaway!

  2. Rachel thanks for the great giveaway! I love your blog and read it regularly. I would love to win the book as I am not doing well reading regularly - my excuse is my 4 kids, but realize honestly I am lacking discipline and self-control in doing so. When I am in a spiritual dry spell I try to pick up books that are affirming and play worship music and hymns (miss a lot of these since my church plays more contemporary music but grew up with traditional). I also try to find a moment when I can read a psalm or proverb. Thanks again for sharing your life through your blog.

  3. What gets be back on track is spending quiet time with God. Sometimes I go too long trying to do it on my own and I see my frustration growing. Then I sit quietly my dark room (I like to do this at night) and meditate and pray. When I am really dry is when I hear the LORD speak to me most clearly. I love it!

  4. Hi Rachel! I love all the P31 girls....great giveaways. When I'm in a bit of dryspell, I usually do one of two things. I love to get out my journals/prayer notebooks and just reflect on the places I've been and how the Lord has brought me through those difficult times; my history is HIS STORY...this usually brings me to a place of praising God for who he is. The other, is I sit down with my girls (ages 4 & 7) and go through some children's devotionals/activities with them (I should be doing this regularly), nothing is better than seeing God's love through the eyes of a child!

    Blessings to you~

  5. I talk to God in my journal. I find that I have a hard time praying, but if I sit down at the computer and just give him all my cares, He comforts me. Sometimes it's through a relevant verse, and sometimes it's a calm that didn't exist when I first sat down. I cherish those moments of talking to God through writing.

I tried to find you on FB to no avail. Any secret to it?

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  8. What gets me back on track when I am going through a spiritual "dry spell". Is deep conversation with my "Father". Prayer does much to revive me. But why is it so hard to pray when we feel depleted spiritually?

  9. I work full time in Women's Ministry, and I know that dry spells are real and can even be frequent. For me there seem to be stages of dry. "Flaky dry" is when I am being intermittent and hurried in my regular time with the Lord...focus is all over the place but not on Him. I have a thirsty dry and it catches me off guard, I don't realize it until I am finding myself not handling something well and doubting God. Finally there is tongue sticking to the roof of my mouth dry - this requires a watershed time...worship music, FINISH a Bible Study assignment, have a cup 'o joe with one of a couple of friends who also know about being dry. I cry out to Him in frustration that I am dry AGAIN, and His living water in so many forms fixes it all again. Thanks for asking this question! Putting on the worship music right now!

  10. To be honest, I guess I'm not sure what I do or will do. I've just begun reading the Bible daily and increasing my time spent talking with God --- not looking forward to a dry spell. I hope I will read his word more fervently and spend more quiet time with Him.

  11. Beautiful post, Rachel!!! We must be twins - loooove chocolate cheesecake and muffins and use the treadmill. Have read through the Bible too. How great THE MESSAGE has been published!

Am going to Tweet your post!

I connect with music and when I feel myself struggling I immerse myself in the Christian melodies and words. Love reading through old hymnals too. What beautiful words of wisdom are found there.

If I happen to win, please give the book to someone who is going through a crisis. I can pick up a copy. :D

  12. When I'm feeling dry spiritually, there are two things that quench my thirst every time. One is a breakfast date with a sister in Christ. A faithful friend with wisdom and encouragement sparks my spirit. Another sure fire way to ignite my spirit is going for a morning run with inspiring worship music playing on my ipod. A dry spirit causes the body to feel dry as well. Going for a run and worshiping God is a refreshing combination.

  14. When I'm feeling spiritually dry, I quench the thirst by reading a book in the Bible. I just open it and often ask for clarity and openess so that I will be open to soak in what the Lord has set for me to learn that day. I reconnect with His truth and feel rejuvinated.

Thank you for the generous givaway

  16. I am in a spiritual dry spell now, of my own making.... I want to draw closer to God, but it seems as if I am in the middle of the desert and I can't find my way out. I tell myself every day that I will spend time in prayer and Bible reading, but most of the time it does not happen. That just makes me feel more guilty, and less worthy. I want out of the desert!

When I'm in a spiritual dry spell, I read the Al-Anon materials. Although the God they reference they make "generic" -- they are totally spot on! ie., God is in control. They are great -- if you've never read them, I highly suggest them! :) God bless!

  18. Hi Rachel, I always to read your blog. Thanks for sharing your life and what God is teaching you. When I am feeling "spiritually dry" I listen to some teaching cd's while I am in the van (with 3 carpools that is where I spend most of my quiet time at this stage of life) and I pray scripture that seems relevant as to what is going on in my life at the time. And, just as helpful is meeting my wise, mentor friend Jenny for dinner. She always seems to know just what to say. And I pray to be that friend to others.

  19. I begin to feel dry spritually when I have missed a day or so with the LORD. I enjoy getting up early in the morning when it is still quiet, before everyone wakes up, just to be in His word. I love feeling the gentle touch and reading what he has to say to me that day. So when I feel dry I go to the Word, His word.

  20. Rachel, your question can be a difficult one to answer. For me there is no perfect formula, but one of the things I do is go back and read my journal. There's nothing like reading about what God has done in your life in the past to give you hope for your present and future. To read about the dry, desert places I've been in before and how God brought me out is very encouraging. I would love the chance to win your free giveaway. I enjoyed participating in your Devotional Carnival yesterday and being encouraged by others who participated. Thanks for the opportunity!

  21. How fun - thank you!

When I am off track spiritually, I tend to find a quiet place (sometimes a comfy chair and sometimes it's in the bathroom, with the door shut, sitting in a dry tub just to get a moment :) ) and just sit. God will bring me comfort and peace, and I don't get back into what I'm doing until I feel that peace. If I am really down low, sometimes it takes a few Christian songs to get me back to myself again.

    Warmly,

  26. When I'm spiritually dry - I MUST get away. I usually pack up my notebooks, journal, cooking magazines, and books - and drive to the city so that I can find a cozy corner in a bookstore to hang out in. Actually - that sounds good right about now :)

And then sometimes - I will just call my grandmother - and she will set me straight :)

I love to cook and always love new ideas and recipes. Yes I follow your blog and have for about 2 1/2 years now. :) What do I do to get back on track... I listen to praise music or I pray which sometimes can start out as a whine to God and then eventually turns into a more repentant prayer asking Him to correct the areas of my heart that are not right. Funny I think I did this this morning. :)
I'd love to win any of these, gifts.

  31. I love reading your blog and have enjoyed reading about your new passion for cooking. Food (esp cooking) is my love language so I have been your silent cheerleader as you have discovered this new love.
Two things that always bring me out of a dry season is passionate teaching (a P31 blog or message, Beth Moore on TV or video, etc) and Scripture - especially in a more modern version like NLT or the Message. Something about reading it in a new version brings it to life in a new and challenging way!

I am reading thru the NLT Chronological Bible with Wendy Pope this year but have it down to read it thru the Message next year. I didn't even realize it was available until you talked about it on your blog in early January!

However sometimes NONE of those things seem to work and at a time like that I don't know how to get out of the spiritual dry spell. When I opened my bible to read the daily devotion the words I read were "Build your houses and settle down" Jeremiah 29:5. God spoke clearly and I settled down. It was great! My dry spell was over.

  76. When I'm in a spirtual dry spell, I try to increase my prayer and meditation time (or try to make sure I'm not skipping any mornings)! I like to pray when I first wake up and then read from "Jesus Calling" and from some Hazeldon Meditation books and then read a couple chapters from my Bible. I then try to sit quietly and listen for God.

  79. When I am in a spiritual drought, I often get out old journals and look at the ways that God has worked in my life. Then I turn to the Word. It never fails, a verse jumps of the printed page and speaks to my thirsty heart. Music is also a very important part of my spiritual life. It renews and restores parts of my heart. Generally I hear a song at church or on the radio that I have not heard before, or for a long time and the lyrics resonate within my weary soul. Finally writing and processing the reasons that may be causing the drought, or just creating a list of things that I am thankful for.
Thanks for the fun giveaway! It's really fun :) And thank you for your encouragement through your blog :)

  96. I'm in a spiritual dry spell right now actually - or more like a spiritual roller coaster. I have these great moments where I will stay on track for several days, then I hit a bump in the road, and I fall. Then, I have to pick myself up and get started again. Sometimes it takes a few days. I've always done this & I just pray that with God's help, I can get out of the desert & this dry spell I'm in.

  97. Funny you should ask us what gets us back on track when we're spiritually dry. For me lately, it's the thought of heaven, and I was just thinking about it before I read your post. I've been listening to David Jeremiah this month on the radio, and his series on heaven, and my devotions correlate with his sermons. I keep thinking about my perfectly new body with all it's working parts. :) And,oh, the reunions! Reading about the New Jerusalem excites me and I can't wait! All this makes me just want to draw closer to the Lord and how can I stay in a slump spending time with Him?

When I am in a spiritual dry spell, this may sound silly, but I walk around my house and I remember how he is in everything surrounding me, for example, the border I hung in my laundry room, when I said, "Lord, my hands arent skilled in this, but if you help me I know we can hang it straight" (its straight)And the shelf I stained to hang over my family room couch, I remember standing in the stain aisle unable to choose the right shade and asking for his help and sure enough, there he was to advise me. It reminds me to bring him in to the busyness, rather than trying to go it alone, which is what usually leads to the spiritual dryness in the first place!

What helps me when I am struggling in my walk is talking with other Christian women who encourage me and show me what God is doing in their lives. It reminds me that I need to stay close to God if I'm ever going to become the woman He made me to be!

  105. When I am spiritually dry the best thing to get me back on track is to get up earlier and find some quiet time out of my daily routine to spend in His word. Reading in my Bible often puts my perspective back where it should be. I usually don't end up in a dry spell unless I haven't been spending enough time in the word. The other thing that lifts me up when I am feeling wrung out is when I listen to some good contemporary Christian music.

  108. A lot of things can help. But the the most crucial thing to do is this. I close my eyes. I sit still. I notice God. Is He there? Yes. Then I try to go on noticing him. I notice him when I wake up and have my coffee in the morning and when I get the mail. I notice him when I cook supper. I notice him when I lie down at night and I see the stars out my window. He is every where. Before long, I am seeing him everywhere and I am filling up again, filling up with who he is and how he is always present.

Why is this the most crucial thing to do? Because what has usually happened to me is that I have become over-stimulated by all the noise and busy-ness of our modern world. I have been just paying attention to that noise, all the while my inner person has been going on through the day without sustenance.

Because the noise and flash of the world stimulates and exhilarates, but does not nourish, does not rest, does not restore the soul. It has been happening for some time and I didn't realize it. So I have become dry.

  117. Had a bit of a dry spell starting out yesterday and today. I read an Oswald Chambers encouragement from My Utmost for His Highest today about not waiting till we fill inspired, but taking the "initiative" to get moving ourselves and then after doing so God will give the inspiration. So, I started memorizing Psalm 34 today and immediately could feel God being please and His inspiration fan into flame the spark flickering in me.

What a great passage. "I will extol the Lord at ALL times, His praise will always be on my lips" vs 1. I needed to spend some time today BLESSING HIS NAME!!!

  138. Both the Bible & the cook book would be wonderful things to win, thank you for offering them.

When I am spiritually dry, I force myself to sit down and make a list of things that I am thankful for and to write down (or at least review in my mind) some prayers that have been answered.

I will admit that there are times when doing this doesn't always help as much as I would like it to. There are times when I look at my 'thankful' list and think yes, I do have these things but... Thankfully, my Savior is gracious and forgiving & loves me always.
Complete honesty? The above is totally true but it is also true that sometimes the dry spell lasts a while and I don't come out of it very well or very fast, but I have recently been finding that the Psalms are very helpful for when I am in a 'dry spell'!
