Getting SOAPY in my Quiet Time

I'm using the SOAP method as I read and journal my way through the book of 1st John. The method is simple but effective.

Ever notice how the simple approaches to Bible reading or Christian growth can often be the most effective? I think sometimes we make it too complicated - and then we avoid doing it, assuming it too trying or too time-consuming. It doesn't have to be.

Here's how this method works:

  • Write out the Scripture.
  • Write down 2 or more Observations from the passage.
  •  Write down 2 or more Applications from the passage.
  •  Then Pray in response to what you read or learned.

That's it. Take a verse or two from whatever passage you are currently studying and try it. If you're not currently studying anything in the Bible, join me and these girls in the book of 1 John.

Wondering what I took away from my journaling time through the first four verses in 1st John?  Here are a couple of "bottom lines" I wrote:

Life is Jesus. Jesus is the Word of Life. If I want life, I want Jesus. And if I want Jesus, I want the Word of God. So if I'm thirsting for life, I'm thirsting for the Word of God. (1 John 1:1-2)

Christ is the Good Life. (1 John 1:1-4)

God has been impressing that last one on my heart - over and over for a couple years now.

What has the Bible been teaching you lately?

  1. Every day when I read the Bible right now, He is speaking to my heart "pursue holiness". Choosing the clean over the unclean things. Making choices and reactions based on eternal perspective. I've got a long way to go....but His theme for me lately is ummistakable!!!

    SOAPY indeed.

  2. Hello Rachel,

I like the practice of writing out scripture. That helps me in journaling and memorizing scripture too. Thanks for the reminder of that.

I have been reading Isaiah the last month or so. It has powerful imagery, fun play on words, and convicting themes.

  3. What a great method of studying scripture and finding practical application.

God has been speaking to me lately about growing my faith by enlarging my expectations. I wrote about it yesterday. Blogging about the scriptures God places in my heart makes them more real to me, and sharing what I learn helps me to remember the lesson. I can always go back and read it when I need it. ( I made a rhyme :))

  4. I have taught this method to my Bible Study women at church. We started two years ago with two very young believers and now have another new believer in our circle. The ones who started with us two years ago are constantly encouraging her to persevere in the method because "it totally changes the way you read and understand the Word."

We've tried two other video studies, but the original group insisted we go back to the SOAP method. This method allows the Holy Spirit to speak to each individual, without according to God's agenda.

We're working through John right now. Last week our newest member highlighted John 9:31 - God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. The Holy Spirit tugged at her heart and when she reached John 9:35-39 she laid on her bed, wept repentant tears and asked Jesus into her heart.

I love watching the Lord work through his word.
