Numbering Days Aright

I just got off the beach after a morning run. Well, more of a morning jog. OK, sometimes I walked. And sometimes I stopped to pick up a shell. You get the gist.

With just a few days left in 2009, us and a family we've been friends with for a dozen years have come to Myrtle Beach for a few days of togetherness and relaxation. The winter rates were so good, we're staying in two penthouse suites at a hotel with an indoor water park. It's been such a treat so far.

So while on the beach this morning, my heart kept echoing a prayer for 2010 from Psalm 90:12:

Teach me to number my days aright, that I may gain a heart of wisdom. (NIV)
Teach me to number my days, that I may present to you a heart of wisdom. (NASB)
Teach me to realize the brevity of life, so I may grow in wisdom. (NLT)

I've been mulling this concept for about a month now. I'd love to hear what you think it means or looks like to number our days aright. And what do you think the connection is between doing this and growing in wisdom?

So that's where I'm at both physically and mentally right now as this year draws to a close. I hope that wherever you you are, you are warm, well and looking forward to 2010.

  1. You know for me Rachel I think it means to make me more aware that our days are numbered. And that if we lived day by day as if each day is our last then we would live our life to the fullest. And not waste our time on petty things. But what IS important. And on the things above. This to me can only make you wiser...right?

Enjoy your vacation! We've thought about Myrtle Beach! But haven't made it there yet!

    Happy New Year!

  2. Glad your having a time away with friends.

At my age you really start numbering your days. But I know the end will be so much better.
    Blessings in the new year,

  3. I think it's about perspective. It's realizing what has come and gone but what is still ahead. Making the most of every situation leads to wisdom. When we choose to just blow days off and not gain anything from them then we are wasting days.

Have fun! I saw on FB that Leslie Nease is at Myrtle Beach too! Maybe you will see her. :)

  4. Hi Rachel
Looks like you had and are having a wonderful Christmas Season.
What do I think "Numbering Days" may mean. Well I think it means to make the most out of your days, do use them wisely and not get bogged down with trivial things that pass away in in this world and to focus on Gods work. I think you do a great job at that, but maybe God has a new level He wants you to go to and wants to make sure your are focused.
    Well that's my thoughts. :)

Love ya and talk to you soon,
    Lynn

  5. An interesting theme is developing. This quote posted on my friend's facebook yesterday: "In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia." (Author Unknown) Now I read your post. I think the message is to be mindful how we spend our time, and be open to the Lord's leading. Many times His leading looks like an interruption of our plans. Let's approach 2010 with a prayer for the Spirit's guidance that we develop discernment to recognize His plans as opposed to our agendas.

  6. I think it reminds us to keep our focus on the things that matter during our days, weeks, months and years. It is fulfilling to look back and think to ourselves, maybe it wasn't easy but I was where God wanted me to be, doing what God wanted me to do and as a result I am wiser for it.
Here's to a year full of days that matter!
    Happy New Year!

  7. I agree with all the posts above! I believe as we reflect on each day, keeping our eyes solely on GOD and being mindful to let HIM have full control that we will grow in Christ. In each day of this life, there is a lesson to learn.

    Have a blessed New Year!

  8. Rachel, this reminds of something I just read in Andy Andrews "The Noticer" The character Jones is telling Willow an elderly woman...If you are breathing, you are still alive...then you're still here...If you're still here you have not completed what you were put on earth to do...that means your very purpose has not yet been fulfilled...then the most important part of your life has not yet been lived..."

  12. Enjoyed reading your thoughts and thinking about the verse. The first thing I thought of was a bulletin board I made a few years back when I taught middle school math - we were about a month from the end of the year so I put - "Don't count the days...make the days count!" I think it's true for more than tweens! We aren't to live just to simply survive the day and do it again tomorrow - our days are numbered, God has counted them, so it's my job to make it count for HIM! As I do, I believe wisdom (and joy) will come! Blessings, Jill
