A Partial Reading List

Here's a list of books I'm either starting, continuing in, or completing month-by-month in 2011.  I call this a partial list because I know I'll forget to list a few!

I read books for a variety of reasons.  Some for professional development. Some for faith development. Some as part of the selection committee for She Reads. Some in conjunction with my job at the university.  Some as part of a book club. Some as research for my writing projects.  And some in conjunction with upcoming sermon series as I work with my pastor on messages at my local church. And of course, a few just for fun.

If you know of a good book to recommend - leave me a comment.

JANUARY 2011

Think by John Piper
Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst
Made to Stick by Chip & Dan Heath
Snow Day by Billy Coffey
The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges (free audio download this month)

I'm also doing Beth Moore's study on Esther with a small group.

  1. I am so glad you included Voyage of the Dawn Treader in your list! I saw the movie the other night and I fell in love with dilog that was shared in the boat after Eustice returned to being a boy. He said the change was "painful, but a good pain, much like pulling a thorn from your foot" I loved it! What meaning for our lives. So glad you listed it on your blog.
    God Bless.

  2. I'm reading "Lioness Arising" by Lisa Bevere. Great insight into women's lives as Daughters of the King - the Lion of Judah.

    Happy Reading!

  5. Started "Made to Crave" today. Excited about that one for sure. I'm also reading your book, "It's No Secret." Reading "Living Life in the Zone," a men's devotional for BookSneeze. I wish there were more hours in the day to read. I have several others that I'm anxious to start.

  6. That's a lot of reading. I use to read a lot but my eyes have begun to bother me so I don't read as often. I did buy the Chronological Bible to read through this year.
    Blessings, my friend

  9. Rachel, I'm also reading "It's No Secret," and loving and gaining a lot from it! Gotta couple more chapters left. Favorite chapters so far include: Chap. 6 - the Secret of Growth through Trials; Chap 7 - Secret of Perfection in God's Eyes; Chap. 9 - Secret of Rest; and Chap. 10 - Secret Beauty of Confessing Sins.

Wondering if you could give a few specifics of how you keep that Sabbath rest. By the way, the Bible study questions there were great, esp. read in light of Romans 14, as you suggested.

I'd also like to read "Choosing to See" by Mary Beth Chapman this year.

  10. Hi Rachel,
I'm trying to finish Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese. I read a lot of Al-Anon daily reads as I am part of this recovery group. I got a Sony Reader for Christmas.....am I able to upload your book, It's No Secret from the Reader store? Would so love that!

  11. You HAVE to read "Heaven is For Real" by Todd Burpo!! His son Colton, at the age of 4, went to visit Heaven during a surgery for a burst appendix. The things he learned and the people he met.... AMAZING!!! A MUST READ!! The family is from a small town in Nebraska, like me. They were featured on Fox News one morning a couple weeks ago.
    Blessings!!

  12. Andrea - Glad you are enjoying reading It's No Secret.

And thank you for telling me which chapters have especially impacted you. That's helpful for me to know and hear.

I'll plan a blog post for the next week or so to address your question of what my sabbath-style rest looks like. So be on the look out for that. Happy New Year!

  15. I have to say I sat last night and made a list of the books I wanted to read in 2011. I used my Amazon cart, my library hold list, and just books that are on my mind b/c friends or blogs I respect have recommended them. They were all fiction, of course! I have 38 books I want to read this year. I think that's very doable. The trick is going to be to not watch tv and focus on reading at night. I've gotten into a bad habit of vegging on the couch watching L&O reruns if nothing else is on. So I will limit my watching to Castle. :) And I will read a lot of great books this year!

If you want, I'll email you the list at some point. It was fun to actually make a list. I've never done that before.

  16. I have read The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges which is very good. Presently, I am reading The Deeper Journey by M. Robert Mulholland, Jr. I have never read any of his books but a pastor I follow on Facebook recommended this book as the best book written on our "identity" in Christ. I am also reading The Suffering of Man and the Sovereignty of God by C.H. Spurgeon, The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis, and The Grand Weaver by Ravi Zaccharias. I finished reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan in November and truly was overwhelmed by his take on our American culture and his dedication to God. I am also reading several other books that I need to complete.
