Got a Favorite Verse?

I was recently asked what my favorite Bible verse is. I always cringe a little at this question. Because I don't like being tied down to just one verse. I'm too ... what? ... all over the map, ADD, impulsive, something like that. So whenever someone tries to force me into the one verse corner and make me stand there, I squirm.

I've been asked this in the past - even had my answer to that question published - but then it changes and the next time I'm asked, I say something different. Yes, I'm a waffler. But there's just so many great verses in the Bible and they speak to me in different ways on different days.

Often, though, it seems God gives me a verse or a theme for the year or a season in my life. Right now that verse is Jeremiah 33:3:

"Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know."

I like this one because despite my time spent in higher ed, I can be pretty dense. And yet God saw fit to drop me into a speaking and writing ministry, so I'll take all the help He will supply! How about you ... have you got a favorite verse of all time, or a favorite verse of the moment? If so, post it so we can all glean from it. And tell us why it's special to you.

PS. I'll look back through the comments and try to answer any questions from the "Afraid to Fail" post soon. Right now I'm off to enjoy my Friday at the coffee shop.

  1. 1 Cor 13:4-7
Love is patient; love is kind. Love is not jealous; is not proud; is not conceited; does not act foolishly; is not selfish; is not easily provoked to anger; keeps no record of wrongs; takes no pleasure in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth; love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

    It's a classic!

  2. Proverbs 3:5&6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all you ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths.

This verse is so dear to me because it teaches me to let go. I'm such a control freak and when things aren't going the way I expect them to, I don't know what to do with myself.

Sometimes giving my problems and worries to God is all I can do.

  3. I did a crosstich years ago with the verse Isaiah 53:5 "But He waS woUnded for our trangressionS, He was bruised for our inquities; The chastisement for our peace wAs upon Him, AND BY HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED." This verse is comforting especially since I've had so many health issues. I know that one day by His stripes I will be healed.

  4. Well one is Psalms 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
I believe because he has blessed me over and beyond. The Lord shows His goodness through blessings in our lives, impossible situations that only He can work out. I know he can handle anything and I know he hears my crys and prayers, He has brought PEACE to my Mom from that horrific accident my brother was in.

This is a Prayer I wrote,

Lord I am so greatful that you exist, my heart, like Yours, is faint with love. No one can ever speak to me like You do. Your words melt all my my fears. I taste Your Word. I eat Your Word and know You are good. I hear sweet whispers in my ears as You drip them over my life. Your word softens my heart and I give You praise. There is none like You!
    I Praise your Holy Name!!

There are soooo many scriptures that I love and have close to my heart, there were 2 already mentioned.

  5. Romans 12:2
"Do not conform yourself to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect."

This verse jumped out at me at a time in my life when I did some heavy soul searching & renewed my faith in the Lord. It is very special to me as it represents the turning point in my life when I realized my life is nothing without Christ.

    My other favorite is:
    Matthew 5:16
"...your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds & glorify your heavenly Father."

This is also very special to me as it reminds me of my purpose on earth...I strive to let my light shine...especially in these dark days we have.

    Great question!

  6. Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God who are the called according to His purpose.

No matter what is going on in my life, I know that God is working all things together for good. He has a plan that is more amazing that I can comprehend, and I can trust Him completely!

  9. Hi Rachel!

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for the sweet comment on my blog last week. Yes, we must clone Holly!

And my fav verse? I'm like you. It's constantly changing. I don't have my bible here, but I love that verse that says "The eyes of the Lord range to and fro across the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully commited to Him."

Or something like that. I think that one's my current fav. It's getting late, or I'd look it up. But at the risk of sounding lazy, I'm going to leave it at that.

    :)

    Blessings,
    Sandy

  10. Wow, yeah---favorite verse questions are always tricky.

If I had to committ to one, it would be II Corinthians 12:9:

But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

  11. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken ahold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind, and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
    Philippians 3:12-14

I'm like you, I waffle based on what speaks to me at the time. Recently God brought me to this verse. I have been reminded that God is not through with me yet...I am still working out my salvation and trying every day to glorify Him through my actions, thoughts and words.

  12. Reading through your blog this morning...I do have a favorite scripture that has ministered to me many, many times through the years. In Him I live, and move and have my being (my very life). Acts 17:28a. Whatever life throws my way I am hid in Him and every movement He is there and He is life itself. And of course there are many others. I journal most every day and in a time of testing I go back and see what the Lord has been saying because He always prepares you for that rough place. Enjoyed your blog...Maine
